Power relays are enabling efficient EV chargers and other green energy systems

High short circuit resistance and protection against external surges

Dec. 01, 2021

As the Electric Vehicle market continues to grow, so will the need for EV charging solutions. The demand for EVs supports the contribution to global environmental health concerns by substantially reducing pollution, along with many other benefits. Industry experts forecast significant sales growth in the coming years for the automotive market, making EVs a key part of the next generation of vehicles and means of transport.

To accommodate this influx, the network of EV charging stations must improve as more EVs take the roads. As a solution for EV charger and EV charging station designs, Churod Electronics offers a new series of latching DC relays. They are designed for power switching in 5G telecom power supplies but are also a natural fit for electric vehicle (EV) charging piles and battery charging base stations.

This versatility is supported by a proprietary latching system that allows power switching with no continuous coil power consumption. The integrated auxiliary contact allows the user to ensure the relay’s state before passing the load. External magnets aid in arc-extinguishing for extended life and consistent performance.

The larger platform CHDR-L offers three versions providing switching loads of 80 A at 24 VDC, 110 A at 60 VDC and 125 A at 80 VDC. The more compact CHC platform wields contact ratings of 63 A at 80 VDC, 80 A at 60 VDC and 90 A at 48 VDC. To meet the environmental and safety needs across many applications, the CHDR-L is a sealed PCB relay with a position-monitoring auxiliary contact. Loads can be passed without concern for polarity, making bi-directional charging applications a perfect fit for the CHDR-L and CHC.

Dual contact design gives the relay a high short circuit resistance, offering protection against external surges such as lightning strikes.

Features of CHDR series:

  • PCB terminal, large current latching contactor: small size (39,2 x 22 x 27,5 mm).

  • Double contact for arc extinguishing structure, load is non-polarity.

  • Low contact pressure drop.

  • Lightning strike surge current maximum 20 KA.

  • Short-circuit resistance current 10 KA, Ment Class 2 grade.

  • Contact gap: ≥ 1,5 mm.

  • Compressive strength between coil and contact 3000 VAC.

  • High rated insulation withstand voltage: 500 VAC.

  • Contact arrangement: main normally open contacts; auxiliary normally open contacts.

  • UL, CCC, RoHS, REACH SvHC compliance.

  • Application: 5G communication power supply, charging pile, other DC load devices.
